We had an exciting week! The weather has been beautiful and we have taken advantage of that as well as had some exciting experiences indoors. I have added photos to my website of the week's excitement.
Mrs. Schueffner's website
On Tuesday we took a walking field trip in the neighborhood. We walked through the paved path to the dog park area. Along the way we used our senses to observe things around us. It was a wonderful walk and we had a great time.
On Wednesday we had a technology teacher from the district come into our classroom with the Virtual Reality viewers. Through the viewers we were able to explore the Amazon rainforest. The students were able to see the rainforest in 3D so it appeared as though they were there.
On Thursday the technology teacher came back and did a Breakout Box activity with us. The students had to work together in small groups to solve the codes on the locks. Once the codes were solved, the box was able to be opened!
Today we are on our Milwaukee Zoo field trip. The weather is beautiful and we are all excited!
On Monday we will be eating lunch outside. If your child would like to bring a beach towel or small blanket to sit on, they may do so. Also, that day we will be taking a picture of the whole school. Each grade level is asked to wear their grade level color. First grade's color is orange. Please have your child wear orange on Monday.

I am sending the weekly email a day early since we do not have school tomorrow. Enjoy the long Memorial Day weekend with your family.
Thank you to everyone who joined us on Tuesday for our First Grade program. The students were very excited to share their reports with you! I am glad so many of you could be part of it. For those of you who weren't able to attend, I hope you were able to view the recording I sent.
Tuesday your child took home a Jackson summer reading flyer. Please put this in a safe place and have your child start their summer reading on June 10. Your child will also be receiving information on joining Mead Public Library's summer reading program as well. I encourage you to keep the reading going all summer.
Today we had a visit from the Dairy Ambassador. Ask your child about this great opportunity.
Today a National Child Identification Kit was sent home in your child's backpack. This is given to you to use and store at your home. In the event of a missing child, you can turn it over to law enforcement and they will have vital information that could help.
On Wednesday please make sure your child has their May reading calendar. I will collect those and hand out a new one for June. I will not be collecting those since school will be ending for the year, but I encourage you to keep reading during the summer. You can keep the 300 minute goal for each month during the summer. Your child is already in that routine so it would be wonderful to keep that going.
On Tuesday we will be taking a walking field trip around the neighborhood. We will explore the outdoors using our senses. Please make sure your child is wearing good walking shoes on Tuesday. Next week we will also be doing two fun technology activities and on Friday we will be going to the Milwaukee Zoo. The days will go by quickly!

We have continued to work on our research report. We wrote notes this week with facts about the animals and began to use the notes to formulate sentences. We will also be working on our diagram and author's page. Be sure to tune into the virtual end of the year program to see the finished product!
I have been sharing with you that we will have a First Grade Virtual Year End Program. The date will be Tuesday, May 24 at 1:30. At the program every student will share the research project they are writing. We will also share a few other surprises with you. Once the date gets closer I will share a Zoom link with you so you are able to 'join' us. Feel free to share the link with grandparents or other special family members. It has been an exciting couple of days. We had a great time at the Jackson Clean Up Night. The school grounds look beautiful! This morning we had a great turn out for Grandparent's Day. I loved meeting and visiting with these special people. Two great opportunities to kick off May!
This week we started our research report. We began by exploring different mammals and choosing one that we would like to study. We talked about the process of writing a research report and I think the students are ready! Next week they will dive right in! This report will be presented to you as part of the virtual year end program. I know the students will be excited to share when it is all done.

This week we have begun an author study on Kevin Henkes. He has written many children's books. These are great fiction stories about real-life kid problems. We can relate to the characters in these books since they are like us! Check your book shelves at home to see if you have any Kevin Henkes books. I have made his books available for the students in our classroom and I have shown them where his books are in the Jackson library.
We have a wonderful family activity planned on May 5 after school. Jackson Clean Up Day will be an opportunity to clean up and beautify our school grounds. Please join us! You can sign up with the link on the attached flyer or send the RSVP paper back from the flyer that is going home with your child tonight.

We had a wonderful field trip to the Stephanie Weill Center to see Rosie Revere, Engineer and Friends performance. The students seemed to love the theater as much as the show! If you have never been to the Weill Center you may want to watch for other opportunities to go. I added some pictures to my website.
In science we have been studying plants and animals. We have been learning about plant parts and how the plant uses and/or needs each part. We have also been learning about what parts animals have and how they can be helpful and how they are used. Some animals use the parts for protection from danger or the weather. From here we will see how plants and animals are similar and what adaptations they may make in order to survive. We planted some seeds and are beginning to see them grow. I added photos of these to the website as well.
This week we have finished our writing unit about opinions. Next week we will begin to learn about a special author, Kevin Henkes. He writes fictional stories and we will see if we can learn a few things about how he writes and try those in our writing.

We started the 4th quarter this week. Report cards are posted to Skyward and you should be able to view them starting today.
Grandparent's Day is coming back to Jackson! Friday, May 6 we invite grandparents and grandchildren to explore our wonderful school. An invite went home last week. We wanted to give families plenty of time to plan if special arrangements are needed.
The annual Brat Fry is also coming back next year! If you would like to be part of the planning committee we would love to have you. The first planning meeting will be Monday, April 25 at 4:00 in the Jackson library.
With the new quarter we will be switching our Social Justice focus to Action. For the past 2 months we have focused on Justice. I shared many wonderful picture books that address this topic and we have done some activities to go with them. On my website I posted the books that we read in case you would like to find them online or at Mead Library to reread with your child/family. Our last topic of Action will focus on speaking up and doing something if people are being unfair.

Today a new reading calendar went home with your child. Please make sure your child's March calendar gets sent to school on Monday if it wasn't turned in today.
We will have a tornado drill next week. It is tornado season in Wisconsin so we want to make sure we are prepared!

We had a busy week of school. We read informational books with our guided reading groups and talked about the facts in the books as well as the text features that helped us read them. We worked on fact families in math and recognized that addition and subtraction facts are related. We learned about some landforms and discussed which ones are found in our area. For writing we learned about some famous people and gave our opinions on a few topics. I think all of us are ready for a week off of school to reset ourselves for the last part of the school year!
Please remember to have your child keep reading next week. Time spent reading each day is good for a growing mind! It will also keep the reading calendar on track and help your child to reach their reading goal.
Here are a few other dates to remember:
March 21 - 25 - No School, Spring Break
April 15 - No School
The first grade team has begun to plan a few end of the school year events. I want to share those dates with you so you can join us! I will share more information as the dates get closer but wanted to be sure you knew the dates now.

We had a fun Spirit Week in celebration of Dr. Seuss. We listened to a few of his books and gave our opinions on them. It was great to hear everyone's different views.
We are going to write opinions about our favorite book. I would like your child to bring in their favorite book from home. Please send it to school with them on Monday or Tuesday. Hopefully we will have a long list of good books to read!

What a crazy week! I knew it was going to be different with 2 days off, conferences this week and Twosday, but I never guessed we would have had an unexpected day off as well!
We worked on our Twosday activities on Wednesday and made the best of it! I hope you were able to find a safe place to keep your child's Time Capsule envelope so they will have it to open on 3-3-33. The students worked very hard on this and I can imagine their excitement when they open it in 11 years!
We have been exploring all of the continents. For those of you connected to your child's Seesaw account, I hope you have taken a look at the material that we have used for this study.
Today we used the Dash robots and had a blast. I will be adding photos to the website and I hope you take some time to look at them. Ask your child what they thought of the activity and what they learned. Mrs. Schueffner's website
The last day of February is on Monday so please send your child's reading calendar to school on Tuesday. I will send the March calendar home on Tuesday in their reading bag. Thank you for your continued support of your child's reading!
Next week we will be having a Spirit Week in honor of Dr. Seuss. This week a flyer went home that listed the themes for each day. I hope you have started to plan what your child could wear each day to celebrate.
Monday - Mixed Up Monday - Wear mismatch, backwards, or crazy clothes & hair
Tuesday - Oh, the Places You'll Go - Wear a college jersey or t-shirt
Wednesday - Hats Off to Dr. Seuss - Wear your favorite hat day
Thursday - Rock Your Crazy Socks - Crazy sock day
Friday - Cuddle Up and Read Day - Pajama day

'Twosday' is Tuesday, February 22 (2/22/22). We are going to celebrate '2' that day! We will do a fun Time Capsule writing activity. The students will answer some questions about themselves and then they will take it home. We will put it in an envelope marked with the date to have them open it again. The date will be 3/3/33, which is a few months ahead of their high school graduation! Think of a good spot where it can be stored until then!
Next week we will do a fun activity with Dash robots. These are part of our Makerspace materials. Dash robots can be used for learning coding. We will be using them to review our map skills, specifically the direction words and using map key symbols.
I added some pictures to my website last week after we did a math activity where we built 3D shapes with playdough and toothpicks. You may want to take a look. I will also add some pictures after our fun with the Dash robots. Mrs. Schueffner's website
Just a reminder that there is no school for students on February 21 and 25.
We will be having a Spirit Week in honor of Dr. Seuss during the week of Feb. 28. Next week I will share the info for each day so you can plan for the following week.
I am looking forward to seeing you at our conference next week. Please let me know if you need a reminder as to what day and time you signed up for.

Monday will be a very exciting day. It will be Pink and Red Day in honor of Valentine's Day so please help your child find a great outfit to wear that includes these colors. Also, we will be exchanging valentine cards. I sent home a paper with information about this last week but I have also attached it to this email if you need it again.
Continue to read with your child each night. Last month we had the most students reach the 300 minute goal so far this year. I am hoping all of those students can do it again, and maybe even add a few more to the list!
As a school we have been working on building kindness chains in the hallway. Each classroom is earning links to be added to their chain. In order to earn a link, the class needs to show signs of being respectful, responsible and safe. Our hope is that we can earn enough links to connect chains from one classroom to the next. To celebrate these great behaviors we will have a Colors of Kindness Day on Feb. 17. First grade students are asked to wear orange.
Just a reminder that there is no school for students on February 21 and 25.

This week we started a measuring unit in math. We measured ourselves and have learned about a few different types of penguins to compare our height to their height. We wrote a 3 chapter book about the ocean while reviewing table of contents, headings, and sentence structure.
Please continue to review your address, city, state and country at home. Last week I did a quick check to see how everyone was doing on knowing that information and I found that we still need lots of practice. I plan to focus on that a bit more in class too.
A new reading calendar will be going home on Tuesday with the start of February. Please total your child's January minutes and be sure the calendar gets sent back to school on Tuesday.
Next week I will send home a note about Valentine's Day so you can begin to plan for that special day.
The 100th day of school is coming up on February 7 and I have begun to plan a few special activities for that exciting day!
Next Friday is Jackson Pride Day so have your child pull out those Jackson t-shirts and sweatshirts. If you don't have Jackson gear remember our school colors are blue and white.

This week went by quickly. It was a short school week but a busy one!
Continue to read at home daily with your child. As I read with each child last week I noticed many students have grown in their reading abilities and are using strategies when they are unsure. That is just what we want to see! In order to keep the growth going, they need to keep practicing so thank you for the help you are giving them at home.
With the new quarter we will be switching our Social Justice focus to Justice. For the past 2 months we have focused on Diversity. I have shared many wonderful picture books that address this topic and we have done some activities to go with them. I will post on my website the books that we have read in case you would like to find them online or at Mead Library to reread with your child/family. Our topic of Justice will focus on knowing when people are treated unfairly. We will also learn about people who helped stop unfairness and worked to make life better for many people.

We have had a great week of school. The students worked hard on their reading assessment and we also did a few other assessments as well. It is so wonderful to see the growth since the beginning of the year!
On Monday we learned about the phases of the moon in a fun way. We opened up Oreo cookies and used the frosting to show the shape of the moon in different phases. I added some pictures to my classroom website if you would like to see the kids in action! Mrs. Schueffner's website
Next week we do not have school on Monday or Friday. On Tuesday we will be learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. and discuss why we think there is a day named for him. On Friday I will be working on grades and report cards. Report cards will be posted to Skyward on Friday, January 28.

Next week I will be reading with each student individually to check on their reading progress so far this year. I will be doing this mainly during our reading time so you will not see new guided reading books going home next week. Please plan to find some books at home to read together.
I hope your child has started off their reading calendar with 10 - 15 minutes of reading each day this week. In class we talked about setting goals for ourselves for the new year and I mentioned that reaching the reading minutes for January would be a great goal to work towards.
We started a science unit about Patterns in the Sky. This week we have learned about the sun, stars and the moon. I encouraged the class to look outside tonight to look at the shape of the moon. We began to discuss the phases of the moon and will continue to learn more about them next week.

We had an exciting week learning facts about reindeer (not the magical ones that help Santa). Ask your child what facts they can tell you about them.
We also listened to How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss and thought of things that may make the Grinch happy.
On Tuesday we had a Breakout activity where we needed to use clues to solve the combinations of four locks. This is the second time we have done one of these activities and the students worked very well in their small groups and looked carefully at the clues to find the answers.
We had 4 fun Spirit Week days. I took pictures and added them to my classroom website. You should take a peek. Mrs. Schueffner's website
Reminder: Your child should continue to read over the holiday break. I will be collecting their December reading calendar on January 3 when we get back to school. Their goal is 300 minutes.
No school December 24 - January 2.
Enjoy the time you spend with family and friends over the holidays. I hope for a healthy New Year for all!

Just a reminder to keep reading daily at home. Write the number of minutes your child reads on their December reading calendar. I will send home a January reading calendar next week so you have it on January 1. I will have the students turn in their December calendar right when we get back from the holiday break. 300 minutes is the goal!
Please remember to send appropriate outdoor clothing with your child each day. Boots daily would be appreciated. There is a lot of mud outside and if the students don't have boots that are taken off after recess the mud is tracked into the classroom. The colorful rug that the students sit on in the classroom now has many muddy spots! I know the students don't want to be sitting on that so the boots would be a way to help the situation.
On Wednesday your child took home a sheet listing the dress up days that are planned for next week. You may want to take some time this weekend to plan for them!
Monday - Wear Christmas sweaters, cozy hats and scarf
Tuesday - Green Day and Crazy Hair Day
Wednesday - Christmas accessories
Thursday - Pajama Day
Just a reminder that we have an early release day on Thursday. Students will be dismissed at 11:45. Our winter break is Dec. 24 - Jan. 2.

We have been working on fictional writing and have a project that needs your help. Your child will be writing a Cinderella story. We would like you to help your child think about their heritage so your child can add some ideas to their story. A pink paper is going home in your child's home folder tonight. It would be helpful if you could complete it this weekend and send it back to school on Monday. I have also linked a video to this email that has a little more explanation.

On Wednesday your child took home a paper and envelope so they could write a letter to Santa. Please return letters by Wednesday so we can put them in the mailbox and the elves have time to get here to pick them up.
Our Wisconsin winter weather is here! We have had some cold days, some snowy days and some warm days! Please make sure your child has appropriate clothing at school to participate in outdoor recess. Snow pants and boots are needed in order for your child to play in the snow. Also, make sure your child has an extra set of clothes in their locker for days they get wet.
Today the South High Singers visited Jackson and shared with us a wonderful performance. Next week the Jazz Band will be here and I know we will hear some beautiful music from them as well.

I hope everyone had a nice holiday last week. Now we are on to the rush and craziness of the next holiday season!
Thank you to those of you who attended last night's family event. I thought it was a wonderful night. The stories and songs got everyone in the holiday spirit!
We have been working hard at school. We have been reading and writing fictional stories. In math we have been working on looking at an amount we have and figuring out how many more we need to get to a certain number. We have been continuing our exploration of holidays around the world. This week we explored Sweden, Mexico, Israel and Kwanzaa. Ask your child about what they have learned about these countries and/or the holidays.
I read a book to the class this week called Love by Matt de la Pena. We discussed the places and the people that show us love. Your child is taking home a paper today where they wrote an idea about where they find love in their life. You may want to take a peek!

I wish all of you a happy Thanksgiving and New Year! Enjoy your time with family and friends.
Next Tuesday is the last day of November so please check on your child's reading calendar. Remember that their goal is to read about 10 minutes each day which would total 300 minutes for the month. Have your child hand in their November calendar on Wednesday and I will send home a December one that day as well.
Be sure to ask your child about the exciting activities we did this week, like the Breakout activity, holiday study of Hmong New Year and Germany, video of Hmong New Year starring our classmates and the special library lesson. I have added some pictures to the website so be sure to take a peek!

Next week is going to be an exciting week at Jackson School! We will be celebrating Thanksgiving and Hmong New Year.
Our class will also be doing a special Breakout activity with one of the Technology Coaches in the school district. The students will be working in small groups to solve problems so we can unlock 4 locks in order to open a box. After the locks are opened we will be able to see what is inside the box.
Next week we will be starting a study of holidays around the world. We will learn about 15 holidays. Each night ask your child what holiday they learned about that day.
A flyer is going home today about our next Jackson School event. We are excited to bring to you Virtual Bedtime Stories. For this event, you are able to participate from home! Staff will be reading some fun holiday stories and you can listen from home. Read the flyer for more information.
Remember that we are done with school early on Wednesday, Nov. 24 at 11:45.

I am sending the weekly email a day early since we don't have school tomorrow due to Parent/Teacher Conferences.
Next week we will focus on fiction books. We will read fictional books and write fictional stories. These books have made up elements. We will be looking for the characters, setting, problem and solution in the books and then we will include these when we write the stories. Look to see what fiction books you have at your house.
Monday will be the next PTO meeting. The meeting is virtual and starts at 6:00. If you wish to join, the link should be sent out soon.
Thursday is picture retake day. Your child's picture will only be taken if he/she was absent on Picture Day, or if you would like your child's picture retaken. If you wish to have pictures retaken you need to contact Harmann Studios to have your child's name added to the list. Their phone number is 920-425-7584.

I am sending the weekly email a day early this week since we do not have school tomorrow.
Over the weekend spend some time reading and adding up the total minutes your child read during October. I will collect those reading calendars on Monday and send home a November calendar that day as well.
Quarter 2 starts November 8. I have begun to work on report cards and the information that I would like to share with you at our conference. I feel like overall we have had a very productive first quarter of school!
With the new quarter we will be switching our Social Justice focus to Diversity. For the first 2 months we have focused on Identity. I have shared many wonderful picture books that address this topic and we have done some activities to go with them. I will post on my website the books that we have read in case you would like to find them online or at Mead Library to reread with your child/family. Our topic of Diversity will focus on how all of us are different and that is okay, in fact it is wonderful!

The following are the picture books we have read and explored for the topic of Identity. After reading these books we have talked about our interests, our family heritage, what we look like on the outside and how we feel on the inside. I encourage you to read these with your child again and have them share their thoughts with you.

There is only about 1 week left of October. Please make sure your child is on track to reach their reading goal of 300 minutes this month. I will collect the calendars on Nov. 1 and send a new one home that day as well.
Today we made applesauce after learning about apples all week. We explored informational books about apples which taught us what they look like, how they grow, the parts of an apple as well as many other things. We used that information to write about apples as well. I put some pictures on my website of the first grade chefs! Next week we will focus our writing on pumpkins. Mrs. Schueffner's website
Trunk or Treat is coming up on Tuesday, Oct. 26. I hope many of you will be able to attend. Please consider helping with set up or during the event.
We also have conferences coming up. Conferences will be held Wednesday, Nov. 10 from 3:00 - 8:00 and Friday, Nov. 12 8:00 - 1:00. You can choose an in-person conference, phone conference, or video conference. Please go to this Google Form to sign up for a day and time that works for you. We will not be wearing the costume all day but instead we will put it on toward the end of the day.

I am hoping that everyone has had a great start to their October reading calendar. Please remember that approximately 10 minutes of reading and practicing sight words each night is suggested. Your child's goal is to read 300 minutes each month. Please help your child achieve this goal.
For those of you who ordered from Scholastic books last month, the books are still on the way. The shipping time has been taking longer than usual. I will send the books home with your child as soon as they arrive.

On Tuesday I will be starting to meet with students in guided reading groups. I will meet with small groups of students to read books and work on reading skills. I will tailor these groups to exactly what the students in that group need to grow as readers. A book will go home in a ziploc baggie. Please have your child read the book to you and send it back to school the next day. Be sure to mark the reading minutes on your child's reading calendar.
I am hoping your child's reading calendar is getting filled up. Everyone's goal is to read at least 10 minutes each night. I will collect the September calendar at the end of the month so please make sure you are taking time to read at home.
I have been noticing that many students are not able to tie. Tying shoes would be a great thing to practice at home.

It has been a wonderfully crazy first 3 days of school! I have enjoyed being back at school and I hope your child has as well.
