Daily Snack
We will be having a snack time in the afternoon each day. If your child would like to eat a snack, please have him/her bring one along each day. I would hope the snacks would be healthy choices, like pretzels, fruit, crackers, popcorn, carrots, celery, granola bars, just to name a few possibilities.
Specialist Schedule
We will see the gym, music and art teachers on a 3-day rotating schedule. Our specialist time is in the afternoon from 12:30 – 1:15. We will have guidance class once every other week. Library book check out day is still being determined.
Gym - Mr. Herber Art - Mrs. Higgins
Music - Mrs. Gliem Guidance - Mrs. Bonestroo
Home Folder
Every day your child’s Home folder will go home. This item is very important to help communicate homework, behavior, and other information between you and I. Each day your child will put any papers in their folder that need to go home. Your child will be responsible for handing in any papers to me the next day. Please check this folder with your child every night.
Reading Calendar
We will incorporate a reading calendar as part of our homework during the week. A calendar will go home at the beginning of each month. My hope is that every day your child could find about 10 minutes to read. Once they have read, fill in the number of minutes on the calendar.
At the end of the month, please return the calendar to school with the total number of minutes read. I will be looking for students to add to the 300 Club. These would be students that have read for at least 300 minutes during the month. Please help your child to become a member of the 300 Club.
Behavior Plan
During the first week of school our class will discuss appropriate and acceptable behaviors. We will create lists of these behaviors, give examples as well as discussing inappropriate behaviors. During the first few weeks of school examples of each of these types of behaviors will be reviewed with students.
In our room we will monitor individual behaviors by using buckets. We always want to be bucket fillers. In order to be a bucket filler we should be polite, raise our hand to speak, try our best, be a friend to all…. If we are not making these choices we would be bucket dippers. Students will start each day as a bucket filler. I would hope all students would stay there! If students are doing something that would be considered a bucket dipper, I will discuss with them better choices that could be made. Then I would hope students would change their behavior and show they can be a bucket filler.
If your child is consistently a bucket dipper, a meeting with you, your child and me may be necessary to help your child make better choices. If needed, I will keep you informed through a phone call, email or note.
We will also be monitoring behaviors as a whole class. The class will be able to earn rewards based on appropriate behaviors exhibited by the class as a whole. I will reward these behaviors by giving clothespins. Once the class has earned 25 clothespins they will earn a reward.
Birthdays
For birthday celebrations in our classroom, I would like to celebrate reading along with birthdays. I would like to suggest that your child bring a book to give the class as their “birthday treat”. Your child, or I, will read the book to the class and I will put a dedication in the book and put it in our classroom library where the students can enjoy your child’s ‘treat’ all year long. If you would like to send both a book and a snack that is fine, but please let me know in advance.
